Greetings golfers,

I'll start by wishing everyone a very happy new year. Hopefully it will bring many great golfing experiences for you as well as good health and happiness.

On this coming Sunday Adrian Stephenson will be having his Drive In as the new Club Captain, this involves him and some others dressing up and then Adrian teeing off the first hole as the start of his Captain's year. If you can, please come along and see the fun spectacle at around 9.30am the more people there are the better it is.

This is the time of year when many New Year resolutions are made and some are forgotten within days and others do actually go the course. One I will be trying to stick to myself is to be more positive on the golf course and give myself more credit when I do hit a good shot rather than just thinking that is what I should do anyway and then give myself a real hard time when I hit a bad shot. This way I will remember the good shots more easily because I will have reacted to it, I don't mean running around the fairways high fiving my playing partners but just giving myself a mental pat on the back. The trouble is we all remember our bad shots because we do react to them in various ways and then these feelings stay with us and before we know it we've messed up a few holes. The New Year resolution will be to remember the good shots and forget the bad and this will lead to more enjoyable golf and better scores which is what we're all here for.

Competition news

Over the Christmas period a couple of fun competitions took place. On Boxing Day Phil Coumbe and Andy Ashall convincingly won the Yellowsomes competition with 37pts. A great score considering the format is one where both players tee off and then their playing partners choose the worst tee shot then foursomes play ensues until the hole is finished.

New Years Day had the 6 hole Cross Country course open for play and there was a wonderful turnout with over 100 entries. It was Maggie Shaw who managed to navigate herself around the course the best with nett total of 20.67. She beat three others on countback, they were Steve Molyneaux, Manny Barker and Paul Dowdeswell. They were closely followed by defending champ Eddie Edwards and Brian Wilson who both had nett 21.33.

Tip of the week

Pace of Play

You should be ready to play as soon as it is your turn. While you are waiting, use your time wisely to prepare so that when it is your turn you are ready to play. Here are four things you can do to make sure you are ready to play:

- Put your glove on and check your yardage.
- Assess the wind strength and direction.
- Decide on the type of shot that you are going to play.
- Select your club.
