Paula Cox will represent the club in the regional final of a national golf competition this Spring. Paula, who was Captain of the Ladies section five years ago, secured her passport to the Womens' Golf Association eastern regional finals by finishing top scorer in medal competitions and other qualifying events at Leighton last season. Her success landed her Leighton Ladies Merit award and a place with the top 100 golfing ladies in the region for the 18-hole stroke play event at Thetford in May. The top ten finishers there will qualify for the national finals.
Paula has been a member of the Leighton club for 20 years, and along with husband Keith, encouraged son Eddie to take up the sport. He is now a scratch golfer playing on the professional circuit in America, having just celebrated his 30th birthday golfing in Louisiana. Says Paula, who now plays off a handicap of 25: "I'm really delighted at qualifying for the regional finals. I hope my "A" game will be with me on the day; we will have to see how it goes."
Hitting a Low Shot
With the recent windy conditions I thought it might be appropriate to talk about how to play a shot in to the wind. It is a tough shot especially because everyone wants to hit the ball hard so they can get the ball as far down the fairway as possible. Have a look at my video but the main points are:
- Put the ball slightly further back in your stance . - Change club, so club up by either one or two clubs. - Have a half swing. The reason for this is so it takes back spin off the ball. The harder you hit the ball the more spin is imparted. - Lastly it is vital you have a smooth tempo.
