I hope you're looking forward to the first Major of the year, The Masters. It's the week where we feel our golfing season has started. It's such a great international field and to be honest it could be won by so many, it just comes down to who gets the right breaks and who can control their nerves and emotions the best.
We recently had our own international match when Club members greeted the members of Meaux Boutigny Golf Club at Easter! Unfortunately our French guests were short of their usual Captain Henry Burgon and Cathie his wife due to the recent passing of his mother. But that did not stop our visitors from retaining the Cup by winning the match by 2.5 points to 1.5.
Our Captain Adrian Stephenson and our Ladies Captain Angela Samuels lost on the 18th to Boutigny stand in Captain Jean-Paul Gallois and our former president Kevin O'Donoghue who started the exchange 23 years ago? Also losing narrowly were last years captain Steve Leng and Margaret Osborne to Florence Gervais and Andy Vale! The third match ended all square between Bob Marshall and Val Berry verses Jerome Gervais and Lorraine Leaver. That left former Captain Nick Clarke and Augustine Vale to secure the only home victory verses David Nougerede and Vivienne Vale!
The match saw no favours exchanged between mother and daughter with the home team winning 4 and 2 with some high calibre golf played by both teams!
The return fixture in France will be the weekend of Friday 16th to Monday 19th September 2016. Should any members be interested in enjoying a weekend in France playing golf and our hosts wonderful hospitality please do not hesitate to contact either Kevin O'Donoghue or Nick Clarke.
BIG-hearted Leighton golfers have donated a total of £26,368 to three charities which could also benefit from a further £6,600 under the governments' Gift Aid donation scheme.
Immediate Past Club Captain Steve Leng and Debbie Pollard-Barns who was Captain of the Ladies Section of the club, raised £20,122 during their term in office last year at events including golfing and social functions, and a separate golf charity day raised a further £6,206 in memory of a club colleague who died earlier this year.
Steve and Debbie presented their donation to Keech Cottage, the Luton-based charity which provides care for children and adults experiencing life-shortening illnesses and support for their families. Accepting the cheque, charity organiser Banita Mistry thanked Leighton golfers for their generosity, explaining that the centre, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, costs around £2.5m a year to run.
Says Steve: "Keech, like many similar charities which rely on donations from the public for the services they provide, do a great job and as a club, we are proud to support them."
