Greetings golfers,

The good weather has finally arrived and we can see golfers enjoying the warmth and sunshine as they head positively to the first tee looking forward to a great game of golf. This frame of mind can change though after a few bad shots and it is important to remember that you are in some beautiful surroundings doing something that you are supposed to be enjoying. So even if you are having a tough time hitting the ball where you want to try to forget about the score, relax and try to give yourself a target of thinking positively on each shot. This way you don't give up and focuses you on trying to hit a good shot rather than getting down yourself and wishing you were nearer the clubhouse. Hopefully the good weather will continue for a while and hopefully you will be enjoying the golf just as much.

Competition news

Steve Light is the new holder of the Club's Seniors Spencer Cup

The 59-year-old won the senior-section trophy at his second attempt, his 39 points beating Seniors Vice Captain David Debell by two shots.

A member of the club for 20 years, 12-handicap golfer Steve beat 51 other competitors for the trophy, with other leading challengers being Eddie Mehew and Denis Leitch with 35 points, Peter Finch with 34 points and Derek Hobday, Will Sampson and Robbie John with 33 points.

The Newcomers Cup
was won by Dave Kingham with 27 points, with Nigel Hollis runner-up.

Eighty golfers took part in club skipper Adrian Stephenson's Invitation Day at Ashridge, with Russell Rowles winning the individual event with 45 points, three clear of Chris O'Mahoney and Ben Irvine. Steve Leng, Andy Jenkins, Brian McKay and Simon Enright won the team event, with nearest-the-pin awards going to skipper Stephenson, Nigel Watmough, Josh Rowles, Peter Morgan and Sam Messenger. The event raised almost £400 for charity.

Club Captain Adrian Stephenson's first club match defeat for over a year came against Buckingham. But they had the last laugh as the Club team finished the match 3-2 winners, thanks to victories by Graham Freer and Stuart Goodwin, Nick King and Stephen Gillett and Ben Irvine and Kevin Winchester. Vice Captain John Smith and Keith Edmunds tabled a vital half.

The unbeaten run of the Club's Senior squad has come to an end. After beating Stowe 6-2, they lost by the same score at The Bedfordshire. Skipper Robbie John teamed up with Graham Avery to open the Club's account against Stowe, Robbie registering an eagle on the 7th hole when his 125-yard eight-iron shot found the hole. They were followed into the clubhouse with wins by Harry Adam and Kelvin Young, Peter Myrants and David Newby, Will Sampson and Keith Camp, Terry Wright and Derek Browning and Ron Dickinson and Martin Broadley. But only Robbie and Dave Roberts and Fred Ritchie and David Debell managed to return winning cards against The Bedfordshire, though Harry Adam won a bottle of wine for his nearest-the-in shot on the 148-yard 13th hole.

Last Saturday saw the Dennis Jordan Foursomes Qualifier take place where the top 15 stableford scores plus last year's winners go through to a knockout stage to decide the overall winners. It was Dave Evans and Gary Hart who managed to win the qualifier with 41pts closely followed by Peter Townley and Mark Hammond with a score of 40pts and in third place were the duo of Simon Goodall and Phil Coumbe with 37pts.

Bank Holiday Monday was a busy day with the Millennium Texas Scramble being played and as usual it was a close run competition. The winners with a nett score of 52.65 were Ben Hazell, Oli Mortimer, Gary Bennett and Dan Lamont. In second place were Kate Wright, Stuart Leslie, Peter Taylor and Steve Denisi scoring 53.35 and in third place with a score of 53.90 were Dave Hanley, Steve Molyneaux, Gary Reid and Al Saunders.
