Leighton Buzzard Golf Club Golf Director
Hopefully you managed to have a good Bank holiday weekend. Four golfers who definitely enjoyed the Monday were Ben Hazell, Oli Mortimer, Gary Bennett and Dan Lamont who managed to win the Social Mixed Texas Scramble with a nett score of 48.65. They beat the second place team of Bryan, Ako and Shin Bateman with Dave Robinson making up the four by nearly two shots after they carded a nett 50.55. In third place with a score of 51.3 were the team of Dan Latimer, Colin Beesley, Tim Mitchell and G Mac which included a two on the par 5 5th hole.
With so much rain recently and with fairly mild temperatures the grass is growing like no tomorrow. All of a sudden there is some really lush thick grass around the greens. So when you find yourself in this thicker, wetter rough you need the correct club for the job of getting the ball back onto the green and giving yourself a chance of saving a few shots. With so many wedge options available now it can be confusing trying to decide which wedges to have. When the grass is thick and wet you have to make sure you have enough loft and bounce on the club so the loft gets the ball up quickly out of the rough and the bounce on the club stops it from digging into the turf causing heavy shots.
Bounce is measured in degrees and is the difference from the leading edge of the club to the bottom of the club. The bigger the number of degrees means more bounce and generally these wedges have bigger, wider soles so the club doesn't dig into the ground and helps it move through the grass better with the weight. Wedges with less bounce, for example 4 degrees, can act a little like a knife with a sharp leading edge meaning you have to be very precise in your strike otherwise the club goes into the turf very easily and doesn't make contact with ball which then stays in the rough.
Please come into the Pro Shop and speak to us and we can guide you in the right direction for better golf.
