Greetings golfers,

It was great to see Dustin Johnson finally get his hands on a Major trophy after so many near misses. He drove the ball superbly and when it came down to holing the putts that faced him over the final few holes he was awesome. The second shot he hit into last was the stuff dreams are made of. It was a shame Shane Lowry's putting let him down so badly over the closing holes otherwise it could have been an even more exciting finish. It goes to show even the best players suffer from the pressure of performing to their best when it matters to them most.

We all suffer from a bit of anxiety when it comes to holing crucial putts as we're keen to see the ball go into the hole and what happens is our body sways around and the putter face doesn't hit the ball squarely. So next time you feel under pressure when putting try to make sure that once you have picked your line and got lined up you keep focused on the back edge of the ball for as long as possible so your body doesn't sway around and be committed to the shot so you are more positive, giving yourself a better chance of hitting a good putt and the ball going in the hole.

The US Open sweepstake was won by Oli Banwell and in joint second place were Nick King, Will Sampson and Paul Johnson. Others to pick up vouchers were Brian Kimble, Lesley Bednarek, Josh Banwell and Mike Bluett.

Club news

Ian Alexander won the club's Seniors Tucker Cup on countback from Mike Manning after both scored 38pts. Ian scored 20 points on the back nine holes to pip Mike for the trophy.

Countback was also needed to determine third place, with George Darbyshire , competing for the last time as organiser of the event, claiming the position over John Tarbox and Richard Lancaster after all three finished with 37 points. Denis Leitch took sixth spot, with three "Dave's" - Vaughan, Banwell and Newby - finishing seventh, eighth and ninth respectively after all carded 34 points.

Anne Tilbury won the Ladies Captain Day, winning the event for the second time in three years with 37 points, three clear of Lynn Newnham , with Lesley Bednarek taking third place on countback from Chris Robinson after both finished with 33points. Anne was presented with a new golf bag for her win by Ladies Captain Angela Samuels whose day raised around £500 for charity.

The best front nine score was recorded by Debbie Pollard-Barns with 21 points, with Joan Waples taking the best back nine award with 18 points and there were nearest-the-pin awards for Lesley Bednarek and Vicki Pratt.

The Seniors lost 4-2 at John O'Gaunt, with Paul Johnson and Kelvin Young and John Bettle and John Halstead winning their games. Skipper Robbie John and David Sweetnam and Harry Adam and Derek Browning halved their matches.

But the Seniors bounced back to beat Chiltern Forest 5-2, with wins by Robbie John and Danny Nairne, Kelvin Young and Dave Debell, Harry Adam and Keith Oddie, Steve King and Dave Roberts and David Kingham and David Sweetnam. Nigel Phelps and Graham Avery halved their match.

Past Seniors Captain Terry Wright won the June Midweek Stableford beating current Seniors Captain Robbie John and club Vice Captain John Smith for top spot. Terry finished with 40 points; Robbie took second place on countback from John after both finished with 38 points, with Stuart Goodwin, Graham Freer, Keith Powell, Andres Valentine and Graham Foster heading a chasing pack with 37 points.

Mike Turnock and Will Sampson won the Seniors KRT Winter knockout Salver, beating John Tarbox and Eddie Mehew on the 19th hole.

Pro Am

We are now taking entries for the Leighton Buzzard Pro Am. It is taking place on Wednesday 17th August. With the golf course playing so well it is a great opportunity to compete with a Professional in a day where you play for some fantastic prizes. It is a comfortable format with the two best scores out of four counting and you get to play with some of the best PGA Professional golfers in the area. Our goal is to get to 40 teams this year and we require your support to do this. If you would like to enter a team please click here to register your interest. It truly is a great day at the Club.
