IRISH eyes were smiling at the golf club on Saturday evening after the Celtic warriors claimed their first-ever "international" victory.
Billy O'Neill led his team to a 9.5 point victory, teaming up with Philip Spratt-Callaghan to claim an opening victory, followed by wins by Will Sampson and Steve Paine and Manny Barker and Ben Irvine. John Smith and John Dymock secured a half against the Welsh pairing of Robbie John and Stuart Oliver, with Kelvin Young and Dave Evans and Terry Lingham and Danny Nairne securing wins which made the Welsh runners-up with 6.5 points.
England were third with wins by Stuart Goodwin and Phil Eddy and Phil Coumbe and Peter Burgoyne, securing six points, with the Rest of the World and defending champions Scotland sharing the wooden spoon with three points apiece thanks to wins by David Hawkins and Steve Gillett and Laurie Benson and Ken Wilson respectively.
Its congratulations to John Latimer after he won the Croxford Cup with 41pts beating the pair of Andy Mitchell and Dave Banwell after both scored 40pts. With 39pts came Tim Hobday, Brian Stevens Dave Minister and Ian Alexander.
Other congratulations go to Dave Banwell for winning the Wallis Cup after he defeated Dave Roberts in the final also to Tom Day and Ben Irvine after they won the final of the Rosebury Cup against Andy Jenkins and Steve Light, lastly to Colin Beesley after he won the Peter Taylor Scratch Trophy when he beat Richard Samuels in the final.
Senior section skipper Robbie John is experiencing a sweet-and-sour end of season. He lead his squad to a 6-1 victory against The Bedfordshire, Robbie and Dave Roberts, Denis Leitch and George Darbyshire, Graham Robinson and David Debell, Terry Lingham and Keith Camp, Fred Ritchie and Kelvin Young and John Bettle and Danny Nairne all returned winning cards. Terry Wright and Fintan Donohue halved their match. Only Richard Lancaster and Danny Nairne won for the club as the Seniors lost 4-1 against Luton Hoo, Dave Kingham and David Debell halving their match. A 6-1 defeat against Chiltern Forest saw only Dave Kingham and Kelvin Young win, with Graham Avery and Dave Roberts halving. Brian Carter and Terry Dell and Denis Leitch and Kelvin Young won in a 5-3 loss to Beds & County with Mike Turnock and Keith Oddie and George Darbyshire and Dave Newby halving. Wins by Robbie John and Terry Wright, Will Sampson and Denis Leitch and Pat Quinlan and Martin Broadley earned the club a 3-3 draw at Stocks, but only Robbie John and Andy McDonald and Steve Shepherd and Ron Dickinson returned winning cards at South Beds with the club losing 4-2.
The Club team fared better against Stowe despite skipper Adrian Stephenson and Mark Vincent suffering an early defeat. Wins by Paul Ellam and Steve Giles, Shane Bentley and Keith Edmunds, John Allinson and David Evans and John Latimer and vice captain John Smith earned the club a 4-1 win. Skipper Stephenson and Mark Hammond, Peter Burgoyne and Billy O'Neill, Eddie Stephenson and Bryan Bateman and John Smith and Manny Barker, earned the club a 4-2 win at Chiltern Forest.
But they were taken to the cleaners by the club Juniors as skipper Tim Martin and Oli Banwell beat club skipper Adrian Stephenson and Darren Valentine (1 up); Shin Bateman and Callum Campbell beat Ken Wilson and Graham Freer (1 up), Adam Cobb and Josh Lowe beat Steve Gillett and Bryan Bateman (2 up) with only vice captain John Smith and Mark McLoughlin avoiding a whitewash by halving with Eddie Stephenson and Steve Fleming.

Thursday 15th September: Beds Ladies County Past Captains: 9.00am-10.00am & 12.00pm-12.30pm & 2.30pm-3.30pm.
Friday 16th September: Sandhouse GS: 12.50pm-2.00pm.
