Leighton Buzzard Golf Club Golf Director
Firstly I would just like to take the opportunity to wish you a very happy New Year and hopefully a very successful golfing year. Please don't hesitate to ask myself or my Pro Shop team any questions you have with regard to golf or the club and will always try our best to answer them.
Many players are obsessed with how far they hit the ball and obviously being able to hit the ball a long way does help when it goes on target. In my mind being able to control the ball is much more beneficial. Taking one or two clubs more and swinging the club a little easier helps you stay in control rather than trying to hit the shortest club possible as hard as you can but losing balance and control of the club. Next time you stand over a shot where you can easily reach the green take an extra club and swing a little easier and see how you get on, you may well find you hit the green more often.
As I've said before being able to hit the same club different distances helps you with the feel of your swing and how to control the ball. Click here to see some Tour players take on a 200yrd Par 3 challenge with a putter.
Congratulation to Will Sampson who won the Seniors Barney Hallam Christmas Cup with an impressive 45 points…and had his handicap clipped from 14 to 12 for his troubles.
Will completed his hat-trick of victories, having previously won the Seniors Salver and McKinnon Cup earlier in the year.
Will scored 24 points on his opening nine holes, backing up that first half lead with 21 points over his back nine to complete a round which included three birdies.
Runner-up was Chris Figg with 42 points, Kevin O'Donoghue taking third place on countback after finishing with 41 points along with George Sadowski and Geoff Allatt. Tony Russell had 40 points, with Denis Leitch and George Abbott completing the prize winning line-up with 39 points.
There was a bottle of wine for club skipper Ada Stephenson who was "too young" to qualify for the competition, despite posting 42 points.
The competition was the last for Robbie John as Seniors Captain. He will be succeeded by David Debell.
Former Ladies champion and ex-Captain, Debbie Pollard-Barns bid farewell to club colleagues - by winning the last competition of the year. Norfolk-bound Debbie scored 34 points to win the ladies end-of-year stableford, with Jane Tizzard runner-up….but plans to retain links with the club by becoming a country member.
Kate Wright, Niki Clark and Jane Tizzard teamed up to win the Ladies Christmas competition with 81 points, beating Val Brown, Maggie Shaw and Gill McDougall by a shot. Barbara Bradley, Chris Purkiss and Jan Harries were third with 77 points, a shot clear of Angela Samuels, Gill Ladd and Sue Lambert.
Zan Nicholl, Liz Bagshaw and Joyce Young had the best front nine score with 37 points; Betty Bluett, Sheila Turnock and Janice Hintner had the best back nine score with 39 points, and there were nearest the pin prizes for Chris Robinson, Val Brown and Margaret Browning..
Other congratulations go to Peter Sheridan and Josie Singer after they won the Christmas Mixed Greensomes. In second place were Angela and Richard Samuels, third place went to Jill McDougall and Stuart Leslie with fourth place going to Tony and Avril Simpson.
