Leighton Buzzard Golf Club Golf Director
Congratulations to Andres Valentine who is following hard on the heels of his father and grandfather, winning major club trophies at the tender age of 14.
While grandad Brian and dad Darran have been on the winners' podium several times during their years, neither has achieved what 14-year-old Andres managed to do in the space of two weeks - win two cups and a monthly stableford event.
Vandyke student Andres was playing off a handicap of 19 when he won the club open stableford event and days later added the coveted Groves Trophy by beating the experienced Len Neal by two holes after being three down at the halfway stage.
And after his handicap was slashed, Andres completed his hat-trick of wins, tapping in three birdies to finish with a score of +9 to win the Henley Cup…and had his handicap reduced by a further two shots.
Father Darran has won the Croxford Cup and Winter League since joining the club in 2000, while Grandfather Brian, who was Club Captain in 1989 and President in 2002-2003, was a regular winner at the club and with the Bedfordshire Captains Society.
It is also congratulations to Matt Lowe after he won the 2016/17 Autumn Bowl managing to beat Dave Evans in the final.
An unusual ladies golf competition in which players get an allowance of four shots they can replay without penalty has been won by Judy Ammon. Judy finished the "mulligan" event with 35 points, three clear of Sandra Bellis to collect a prize from Ladies Captain Avril Simpson.
It was great to see Sergio Garcia return to winning ways at the Dubai Desert Classic last week, leading from wire to wire with Henrik Stenson who was trying to chase him down. It says a lot for his mental toughness as in years gone by he may well have folded under the pressure like he has done in Major's past. Now he knows he can finish off a tournament against seriously good players and this will give him confidence to finally win that elusive Major. We all know he can hit fantastic shots but getting over the finishing line in first place in a Major is another thing, maybe this could be his year.
What can we all learn from this?
As we all know confidence breeds even more confidence which enables you to be more relaxed when playing your golf and therefore achieve better scores. It is important for all players to remember their good shots but sadly this is not always the case as they only remember the shots that cost them. Next time you hit a good shot make a mental note to yourself so when you are struggling and your head is a bit down you can recall the good ones and try to build that confidence back up.
