If you get the chance to look at the WGC event in Mexico this week you may well see some very long shots being hit, longer than normal, as the event is being played at higher altitude, 7800ft above sea level. This can mean the ball could travel 10-15% further than usual. The players will have to figure out how far each club is going so they can be confident in their yardages.
They can do this with the help of FlightScope or Trackman technology on the range, where all the data is recorded on spin rates, flight distances and total distances. Knowing how far you hit each club is vital to good scoring.
Every player can get their own yardages by going down to the practice ground and hit balls and then get the average with each club, this gives you that extra bit of confidence when you come to club selection.
With Rory McIlroy back in action this week let's hope he gives the group in front enough time to get away from him before he launches his driver.
Sandra Bellis and Ian Alexander are pictured here being presented with the Davis Cup by last year's Captain Adrian Stephenson after beating Lesley Bednarek and Mike Turnock in the final.
