The Bunker Shot
This week I wanted to talk about a shot that causes many people a problem and that is the bunker shot. Please take a look at the video and you will see aspects of bunker play that are essential.
In the video I talk about the bunker set up that will help you succeed. Okay, so what is it, what do you need to do? First of all, the biggest issue is how people take their set up to the ball. The most common set up problems are that people have their head or sternum too far behind the ball and the other major set up issue is golfers have their hands too far forward. These aspects cause all sorts of problems.
Firstly, having the head too far back will always promote hitting the sand too far before the ball and also will promote thinning the ball. Both are common problems. Having your hands too far forward will decrease the loft on the club which means it will make it more difficult to hit the ball high over a bunker lip. Having the hands too far forward will also reduce the bounce on you sand wedge and cause you to dig rather than slide the club through the sand. I always find it interesting when people are told to follow through. If you dig in to the sand you have no chance of following through. If your club slides through the sand you will always follow and with ease. So, what do you do. Lean towards the target so your head and sternum are opposite or in front of the ball. This will encourage you to make a divot around the area of the ball.
Step two is to do your best at having the butt of the club pointing at your belly button at address. This will do a few things, it will add loft to the club, it will increase the bounce on your sand wedge and it will promote a shallow swing. All of those factors promote great bunker play. Please watch the video and let me know how you get on.
