The Season Begins
The weather is warming up and so is the golfing season. It is the time of year where everyone is looking forward to a good season on the golf course with new equipment to be tried and practice to be done.
Having watched some amazing golf already this year, it gets the competitive juices flowing and when you see the likes of Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm go head to head in matchplay hitting massive tee shots. Both players have full shoulder turns on the backswing and then rotate their body fully to the finish with their right shoulder closer to the target than the left. Together with great short games it just goes to show that the game is not all about how far you hit it, but it does help, especially if the course is not particularly narrow.
Here the course is more about accuracy than distance, so knowing your strengths and playing to them is just as important as knowing how far you hit each club. In this day and age there are GPS devices and Laser rangefinders to help us with yardages and make us more confident when we know how far we have to go, and when you're more confident you hit a better shot.
Well Done David
Congratulations to David Roffe after overcoming life threatening cancer to get back playing golf with his pals. Now the 72-year-old has set the best possible example possible to others facing health challenges - by winning the Seniors first event of the year, the coveted Spencer Cup.
David, a member of the club for 25 years, beat more than 50 club colleagues to get his name inscribed on the trophy for a second time, having won it in 2009 with 42 points.
This time around he needed one less to beat runner-up Martin Price by two shots, with George Sadowski third with 38 points. Morley Smith and Steve Shepherd both had 36pts, with David Nero, Tom Day and Ken Wilson all finishing with 35pts.
David, who was presented with the trophy by Seniors Captain David Debell, promptly had two shots slashed from his handicap and is now playing off 17.3.
