ABBA Night

Well last weekend was an adventure for me as I went to my first club function of the year with my wife Nicola and some close friends. I also played my second nine holes at Leighton Buzzard for about 11 months. It was great to get out on the course again.

Some of you are I know aware that I suffer from back problems which worsened about two years ago, leading to being under Stoke Mandeville hospital and having injections in the base of my spine. They also wanted to inject in my neck, but they mentioned a risk of stroke which frightened my wife somewhat. In one MRI meeting with the consultant he said he would be doing some work on me at some point and that my spine appears older than my actual age.

So the two nine holes I have played over the last few months have been more about testing the back out and I actually played okay on Sunday. Swinging a golf club felt a little foreign, but I managed to make a couple of birdies which was nice. The club function we attended was the ABBA night and we had a great time.

So did plenty of other people as you can tell by the photo. One of the great things about this club is the social side and last Saturday night did not disappoint.

Tip of the week

Where's Your Weight Leaning?

Last week I talked about playing from a downhill lie and I hope you found it useful. This week I am going to talk about pitching and the importance of keeping your weight leaning and moving towards the target and your sternum opposite the ball at address.

Very often people have their weight leaning away from the target without knowing they are doing this. It is extremely common in golf to think you are doing something and you are actually doing the complete opposite. If you lean away from the target when you are pitching, you are more likely to duff or thin your shot.

At address, it is vital that you have your weight on the foot that is closest to the target and when you take your backswing, keep your weight there. This will help keep your body in the correct position. Lastly, on the downswing, make sure you move your weight towards the target. I have made a video to show you an exercise that can help you achieve these things.

Please click here to view the video, please turn up your sound.
