Greetings from Maurice Campbell

Captains' Drive-In

Steve Leng was welcomed in as our 2015 Club Captain on Sunday. The drive-in featured a variety of sporting aspects: cricket, rugby, scuba diving and golf. The drive-in was the work of newly installed Vice Captain Adrian Stephenson, who has been a friend of Steve's for almost 40 years and partner in many of the sporting exploits they have been involved in since Steve moved to Leighton Buzzard as a 16-year-old.

Steve's father George was a coal-face worker at Hickleton Colliery in his native Yorkshire for more than 20 years before moving south to manage Leighton's Working Men's' Club, and then the former Ram pub - a memory reflected in the presence of a ram on the first tee.

Adrian informed us that Steve played cricket for Leighton Forresters cricket club for 10 years, scoring 2,903 runs in 202 innings, hitting 13 half centuries and top score of 89. He also took 29 wickets, 214 catches and 52 stumpings.

The duo packed down for Leighton rugby third team for another decade and then switched to golf, taking up scuba diving at the age of 50 and completing his underwater training with flying colours.

Steve has been a member of the golf club for the past 10 years and he succeeds Derek Lindley who was ceremoniously thrown-out on Saturday, following Friday's club AGM when Phil Coumbe, Andy Wright and John Hastwell were voted on to the club management committee. During there year in office, Steve and Ladies Captain Debbie Pollard-Barns, who also teed-off on Sunday with Seniors Captain Terry Wright and Junior Captain Josh Banwell, will be raising money for the Keech Cottage hospice charity.

The drive-in golf competition was won by Colin Beesley who scored 39 points, a score which included seven birdies. Well played Colin! Jeff Wood was runner-up with 37 points with David Embury taking third place on countback from last year's winner Geoff Dimmock after both finished with 36 points.
