What a difference ½" makes. It's all about the strike
Missing the sweetspot of the clubhead by ½" can make a large impact on the result of your shot. If you strike the ball towards the high toe end of the clubhead you will get a higher flight with a loss of around 3mph in ball speed and a decrease in spin rate of about 500rpm. For slower swing speeds this not good news. When the ball is struck from the bottom of the heel you get a much lower launch and higher spin rate and around 9mph loss in ball speed, this can add up to roughly 15 yards in distance. If the ball is struck from the bottom of the toe end of the club, again you get a lower flight and around 8mph loss in ball speed. For a golfer who swings the club around 90mph this can add up to around 30-40yards of lost distance.
So if you do get a chance to practice, place a tee peg either side of the clubhead when addressing the ball and try to swing the clubhead between them when striking the ball. You'll soon get the correct feeling of striking the ball out the middle.
