Greetings from Maurice Campbell
Leighton Buzzard Golf Club - Golf Director

Greetings golfers,

The Open Championship is underway and it will be an exciting four days of golf. If the weather is calm I'm sure the scoring will be very low, however if the wind blows and the rain comes down it is a very different challenge and the players who move the ball a lot in the air, like Bubba Watson, may well struggle. Here's a quote from his pre Championship press conference. "I just move it a lot. And it's not because I want to. I want to be like the greats of the game, hit the ball dead straight, I just can't do it. I've never tried to do it and I don't want to change my game. I'm doing okay right now, you know. I'm getting to play The Open Championship, so my moving the ball is doing okay. It's just I move it so much, I've got a -- at certain golf tournaments I've got to figure out how to hit it straighter, especially in heavy winds."

It will also be five times winner Tom Watson's last Open Championship so I'm sure there will be many pictures taken on the Swilken Bridge as he walks up the 18th hole, hopefully on Sunday and not on Friday. As I write this I am keeping an eye on the scoreboard and one player has birdied the first four holes so it seems to be relatively calm at the start of play today, it will be interesting to see if his form continues but also players can get lucky with their start times as the wind may pick up this afternoon and just avoiding St Andrews many bunkers will be tough enough. So enjoy the golf at St Andrews in what I think is the best Championship in the world.

Tricky, blustery, scoring conditions made the July Medal a tough one to win. Our Club President, John Preston won the Medal on countback from Bryan Bateman and Paul Ahmet who all scored nett 69. The only other players to break par were Simon Rossiter, Ken Wilson, Andy Ashall and Matt Tizzard with nett 70's.
