Greetings from Maurice Campbell
Leighton Buzzard Golf Club - Golf Director

Greetings golfers,

Gordon Francis at the age of 82 won the coveted Past Captains Trophy, beating more than a dozen former club skippers by a four point margin.

It was the fourth time in the 42 years since he was club captain that Gordon has won the trophy, equalling the record held by the late Eric Wallington and demoting Kevin O'Donoghue into third place with a hat-trick of wins achieved over a five year period.

Gordon was Captain of the club in 1973 and President in 1984-5 and had previously won the Past Captains trophy in 1987, 2001 and 2003.

His latest success, achieved just weeks after beating a field of 50 golfers to win Leighton's prized Tucker Cup for a second time.

The 28-handicapper was presented with the trophy this time around by immediate Past Captain Derek Lindley after demolishing the field with a 40 point haul, with joint runners-up Derek Lindley and Andy Lock finishing with 36 points, one clear of Brian Valentine, Brian Carter and John Preston

And for good measure, Gordon was also in the three-strong team that won the traditional Yellow-Ball Competition, accumulating 36 points with Kevin O'Donoghue and Dennis Jordan.

Bunny Winter Millennium Greensomes

The Bunny Winter Millennium Greensomes was played on Saturday with Adrian Stannard and Paul Jarman taking the title with 42pts, Dave Hawkins and Paul Atkinson came second with 40pts and joint third were Paul Ellam and John Latimer, Jeff Wood and Ron Pearce with 39pts.

Custom fitting

We have many people come into the shop telling us of their golfing woes and whatever they are trying in their swing things still don't seem to be happening for them. We then ask them if they have had their clubs custom fitted and more often than not the answer is no. We offer this custom fitting as a FREE service.

The importance of using the best equipment for your golf game cannot be over emphasised. Consistency, distance, trajectory, control and accuracy are all affected by the use of unsuitable equipment.

Recently, golf club technology has dramatically changed. Club heads are now bigger and more user friendly than ever before, allowing YOU to hit the ball consistently further and straighter.

Using modern day equipment is essential, but it must be suitable for you. Standard clubs are available off the shelf, but there is no industry standard. Therefore to maximise your playing potential, you must use clubs that offer the playing characteristics you desire.

Your irons, driver, fairway woods, hybrids and wedges must be the correct:

- Design
- Loft
- Shaft Flex
- Length
- Lie Angle
- Grip Thickness

And with Irons and Rescue clubs be the best club and number combinations for you!

Selecting the correct club head design to best compliment YOUR game is essential. Once this is achieved, custom fitting the club(s) to ensure they suit YOU is essential.

Shafts

The correct shaft is vital, as this enables the ball to travel further with more control, optimising launch angle and controlling ball spin rate.

Launch Angle

Launch Angle is the angle the ball leaves the clubface in relation to the ground at impact. It is identified during the first half of the ball's flight. To maximise distance this must be optimised.

Shaft Length

The correct length helps players consistently deliver central strikes, producing maximum ball speed and control. Longer shafts produce more club head speed, but consistency and control can be lost. A player's address position, swing mechanics, ball striking, shot pattern, posture during their down swing, height, and wrist to floor measurement must be considered as this affects shaft length.

Lie Angle

With irons, once the correct shaft length has been determined, the lie angle must be established. This measures the angle between the sole of the club and the centreline of the shaft.

If a club is too upright, the ball starts left of the target. Too flat a lie results in the ball flying right. Therefore ensuring your clubs have the correct lie angle, gives you the best chance of hitting the ball straight!

Grip Size

Grip size is important. The grip must feel comfortable, and fit your hand. Grip size can even reduce the effects of some swing faults.

Fitting Testimonial

Below is a Testimonial from Mike Fay who came along for an assessment.

"I just wanted to say many thanks for your kind invitation to attend a FREE assessment of my golf equipment and my overall game... Like your goodself I find Will to be an excellent 'mentor' and as a result I really enjoyed my session with him on Saturday last... To be told by Will that the flight scope read my 'swing plane' as almost perfect was music to my ears and a nice surprise, whilst confident I am usually in the 'right zone', but never able to see myself swing, such confirmation was great... Also to be able to view my shots with various clubs arrowing down the centre of the 'on screen replica' fairway was a real treat !!! His recommendation of a need to improve my short game was spot on, it's my, and probably many others, golf "achilles heel" and I intend to practise his suggested drills asap and often... "

Kind regards,
Mike
