Greetings from Maurice Campbell
Leighton Buzzard Golf Club - Golf Director

Hello golfers,

Rickie Fowler's win in the latest PGA Tour event, the Deutsche Bank Championship, just goes to show how confidence can breed success. Last year Rickie Fowler had many chances to win but never made it, this year he has won three tournaments and has shown he can grind out a win even when he's not playing his best, he now knows he can win when he's in contention, much the same as Jason Day has done this year. Nearly all the top players have their coaches building their confidence by telling them how they're swinging the club and what they are working on is correct or improving rather than the player just hoping they are doing the correct thing.

When you are confident you don't worry about hitting a bad shot because you know you can still overcome a setback with some good golf over the other holes, the pressure comes off and you swing the club with more freedom and you hole some good putts and things seem to go your way. As we all know confidence can be tough to gain and when we do have some keeping hold of it is also difficult. How can Jordan Speith play with such self-belief over most of the season and then miss two cuts in a row. There is no reason to it. It makes this game we love give us so much enjoyment and also so much frustration.

Click here to see how golfs frustrations can get to the Tour Pro's, not just us.

Competition news

The Men's Croxford Cup

The Men's Croxford Cup was a close run thing with Tom Day winning the Cup with 42pts followed closely by Andy Ashall with 41pts and then in joint third with 40pts were Dave Banwell and Bob Banks. There were a further five players hot on their heels with 39pts.

Captain's Charity

On Saturday I teamed up with Club Captain's Steve Leng and Debbie Pollard-Barns to play against other pairs from the Club to raise money for the Captain's Charity. Playing with Steve and Debbie was great fun even though I did manage to put myself in some challenging positions. Thirteen pairs managed to beat our score with Dennis Elliott and Julian Scarr topping the table with 75pts. Many thanks to all who took part, you managed to raise £350 for the Charity.

Womens East of England Regional Championships

Freya Daniels has continued to play well and at 15years of age finished a very creditable third in the Women's East of England Regional Championship.

Her scores of 74, 72 for a total of two over par shows that her hard work on the practice ground and keeping her fitness levels up are paying off nicely.

Morley Smith and I are holding an event on Sunday September 27th at 7.00pm where we will be taking you through our Spanish Adventure which we completed earlier this year. The evening will consist of a three course meal, choosing from a French, Spanish or English menu, and us reliving our adventure in a funny (hopefully), light hearted way. The evening will cost £20 per person of which £3 will go to the Captain's Charity.

If you would like to join us for this fun evening please contact the Golf Club bar.

Club news

Pace of play

Players should play at a good pace. It is the group's responsibility to keep up with the players in front. If the group loses a clear hole and is holding up the players behind they should invite them to play through. Even if the group hasn't lost any ground but feel the players behind are faster they should still invite the faster group through.

Golf Care

Are you taking a risk?

Every time we hear someone say they don’t have golf insurance, we wince. The potential costs associated with injuring someone with a stray shot, for example, should be enough to make you think about taking out a policy. We can help find a suitable policy that covers you with our recommended insurance provider, Golf Care, here…
