How stats can help your game

I came across some interesting statistics this week relating to the US PGA Tour. One that impressed me most was the fact that Freddie Jacobson went over 3 months without a 3 putt, he played 542 consecutive holes without three putting. At the other end of the game Bubba Watson had the highest percentage of drives over 320yrds (42.86). A player called Josh Teater hit the most consecutive fairways (34), Mark Hensby hit the most consecutive greens in regulation (31) and Brandt Jobe had the longest run of consecutive one putts (16).

The reason I mention this is the fact that all top players know all their stats in all the different areas of the game. Every time they play they will record their shots and put that information onto the computer for later reference. This information tells them what they are doing well and what they need to work on and helps them focus on various practice routines. There's no point spending much of your practice time smashing drivers when actually it's your short game that needs most attention.

There are many ways to keep track of your round, one of the better ones is a digital tracking system called Game Golf. It's a wearable device which you tap before every shot and that's it, after your round you upload your data and Game Golf does the rest, it'll capture club distances and various other stats all designed to help improve your game. Click here to see a demonstration of how it works. Pretty impressive stuff.

Competition news

In the Grovebury Medal, which is run throughout the year, the winner is decided by who has the best two nett scores from six rounds. This year the winner is a delighted Steve Tyas, whose best rounds of nett 70 and 67 for a total of 137 beat Gary Hart and Gordon McLaren on countback. The Summer Stableford competition, which again is decided from the best two from six scores, was won by Peter Gadsden. With scores of 41pts and 43pts for a total of 84 he managed to fend off Jeff Beaseley, who had 37pts and a stunning 45pts together with Alex Sandham who had 40pts and 42pts for a total of 82.

Stuart Leslie skippered the Scots to victory in Leighton's annual international, their 217 points beating England led by former skipper Derek Lindley by four points. A Leighton squad skippered by John Tarbox finished third with 207 points, with the Rest of the World headed by Trevor Stone bringing up the rear with 203 points. Leighton pairing Andy Tizzard and Darren Valentine recorded the best score of the day, their 47 points beating Derek Shaw and Mark Newton by one. Peter Hazel and Colin Beasley had 45 points in a round marked by Peter having to be rescued from a pond after slipping in trying to recover his ball.
